# Getting API access

> Who can create API keys, where, and what to do if you cannot see the option.

API access is self-serve: any **admin** of your Telleo account can create keys in the dashboard. There is nothing to switch on first.

## Before you start

* **A dashboard login with the Admin role.** Sign in with the address and login our team sent you when your account was set up. Counsellor and other non-admin roles cannot create keys.
* **At least one AI agent** that can make outbound calls. You choose it per call with `agent_id`.
* **Calling credits** for real calls. [Test calls](/concepts/test-mode) are free.

## Create a key

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the AI Calling settings">
    In the left menu choose **CRM → Calling → AI Calling Settings**, or open **Settings** (the gear at the bottom of the menu) **→ Calling → AI Calling**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Find the API & webhooks card">
    Scroll down past the AI agents card to **API & webhooks**. It shows the API address (`https://api.telleo.ai/v1`), your keys, your agent ids and your webhook.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create the key">
    Click **Create key**, give it a name you will recognise (for example `Our CRM`), and optionally an expiry date. Tick **Can ring counsellors (human calls)** only if this key will place [human calls](/concepts/human-calls); it cannot be added later. Click **Create key**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Copy it now">
    The key (`vak_call_…`) is shown **once**. Copy it and store it on your server, for example as an environment variable. If you lose it, revoke it and create a new one.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Note your agent ids">
    The **Agent ids** list shows every outbound agent and its id. Copy the one you want to use as `agent_id`. The same list is available from the API: [`GET /v1/agents`](/api-reference/agents/list-agents).
  </Step>
</Steps>

Next: the [Quickstart](/quickstart) places your first test call with the new key.

## Managing keys

* Use **one key per system** (CRM, website, automation tool). The table shows when each key was last used.
* **Revoke** stops a key immediately. Calls it already queued still go ahead; cancel them with [`POST /v1/calls/{id}/cancel`](/api-reference/calls/cancel-a-call) if you need to.
* An account can hold up to 50 active keys.

## If you cannot see the API & webhooks card

1. **Check your role.** Only admins see the Settings gear and the card. Ask an admin of your account to create the key, or to give you the Admin role.
2. **Reload the page.** The card appears once the calling setup has loaded; a failed load hides it until the next refresh.
3. **Ask us.** If AI Calling is not part of your plan, or you would rather we set it up, email [hello@telleo.ai](mailto:hello@telleo.ai) with your account name. Our team can issue the key for you, and you can then set the webhook yourself with [`PUT /v1/webhook`](/api-reference/webhook/set-the-webhook).
