# Rate limits

> How many requests a key can make.

Each API key can make **300 requests per minute**. Beyond that, requests fail with `429 rate_limited` and a `Retry-After` header with the seconds to wait.

```http theme={null}
HTTP/1.1 429 Too Many Requests
Retry-After: 12
{"error": {"code": "rate_limited", "message": "Too many requests. Retry after 12 seconds.", "request_id": "…"}}
```

This limit counts API requests, not calls. How many calls run at once is set by your plan's lines (see [Queue and limits](/concepts/queue-and-limits)).

## Staying under it

* Queue many calls with **one** `POST /v1/batches` (up to 1,000 rows) instead of 1,000 `POST /v1/calls`.
* Use **webhooks** instead of polling `GET /v1/calls/{id}`.
* When you must poll, poll a batch (`GET /v1/batches/{id}`) every 30–60 seconds, not each call.
